English

English is the world's most-learned second language and the de facto common tongue of the internet, business and air travel. With 1.5 billion total speakers and over 380 million native speakers across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and dozens of post-colonial nations, it has the deepest cultural reach of any modern language — pop music, film, scientific research and the open web all skew heavily English-first.

For learners, English is paradoxically easy and hard. The grammar is forgiving (no genders, simple verb conjugations, flexible word order), but the spelling is gloriously chaotic, the vocabulary is enormous, and pronunciation varies wildly between regions. The good news: practice partners are everywhere, English-language media is endless, and a year of consistent input — TV shows, podcasts, conversation — is usually enough to reach genuine conversational fluency.
