Japanese is the language of one of the world's most distinctive cultures — 125 million speakers concentrated almost entirely on the Japanese archipelago, plus a global diaspora of pop-culture, anime, gaming and design enthusiasts who picked it up the long way round. It's the language of Murakami, Studio Ghibli, JRPGs, Toyota's manufacturing manuals, and a thousand years of poetry that still shapes how Japan thinks, eats and works.

For English speakers, Japanese is famously difficult — but in unexpected ways. Pronunciation is among the simplest of any major language (just five vowels, syllable-timed, no tones), and the grammar is wonderfully consistent once you've made peace with subject-object-verb order. The real challenge is the writing system: three scripts (hiragana, katakana, and around 2,000 kanji) layered together. The good news is the long climb is exceptionally well-rewarded — every plateau unlocks new layers of media, manga, drama and untranslated literature you simply cannot experience any other way.
