Korean

Korean is one of the world's most rapidly rising soft-power languages — 80 million speakers concentrated on the Korean peninsula, plus a global community of K-pop fans, K-drama watchers, gamers and Korean diaspora who got there through music and Netflix. Hangul, the writing system designed by King Sejong in 1443, is widely regarded as the most logical alphabet ever invented: you can learn to read it in an afternoon, and you'll never look at a 한국 sign the same way again.

For English speakers, Korean is structurally challenging but phonetically gentle. Word order is subject-object-verb (the opposite of English), particles tag every noun's role in the sentence, and verbs change form depending on who you're speaking to. The reward is access to one of the most exciting cultural exports of the 21st century — BTS, Squid Game, Parasite, the entire Korean New Wave — in the language they were actually made in. Once you've cracked Hangul, the climb is only ever uphill, never sideways.
